Many corporate knowledge problems are not knowledge problems at all

More information does not automatically improve performance. Discover why experience, application and Serious Games can turn knowledge into real capability.

Organisations have access to more information than ever before. Internal wikis, e-learning, video libraries, guidelines, AI assistants, search tools and extensive documentation are readily available.

Yet familiar organisational problems remain. People make different decisions despite having access to the same strategy. Knowledge is not consistently applied.

Processes are understood but bypassed. Training insights do not always survive contact with everyday work. Perhaps the issue is not a lack of knowledge. Perhaps organisations too often treat knowing and being able to do as the same thing.

Access to information does not automatically change behaviour

Between information and action lie interpretation, experience and judgement. Knowing that customer centricity matters does not automatically tell someone what the customer-centric decision is when two priorities conflict. Understanding a leadership framework does not guarantee that the right question will be asked at the right moment.

Knowing a safety rule is different from applying it correctly under pressure. This is not an argument against knowledge transfer. It is an argument for being more precise about what learning is supposed to achieve.

Organisations should distinguish between three objectives

What do people need to know?

Documentation, presentations and e-learning can work extremely well.

What do people need to understand?

Context, examples, discussion and connections become important.

What do people need to be able to do?

Here, experience becomes essential.

Because capability develops through application. This distinction changes the way Learning & Development can be designed. Not every problem requires more content.

Some require better opportunities to apply what is already known. This is where Game Solutions can become relevant: when information needs to be translated into decisions, actions and meaningful experiences.

Less content can sometimes mean more learning

In an era in which content can be produced almost without limit, that idea may sound counterintuitive. But perhaps the next stage of corporate learning is not about making even more knowledge available.

It is about choosing more deliberately when people should read, when they should discuss — and when they should act. For learning objectives centred on application, decision-making or problem-solving, custom-designed games can create environments in which people have to use what they know rather than simply recall it.

Serious Games can also play a role when organisations want employees to practise applying complex information, processes or behaviours in an interactive setting. The better question may therefore no longer be:

“What content are we still missing?”

But:

“What experience is missing for knowledge to become capability?”
